“One piece of fact that my American friends have (a) really hard time perceiving is that Google is an underdog in this part of the globe,” he said. “Korea is the world’s sixth largest market in terms of Internet users, and yet Google has a market share that can only be described as ‘minor’ in Korea.”

In spite of how wired Korea is, Kim added that there is indeed a place for Google. “I think the Korean web industry needs a player that can, as a balancing force, provide more options to the users and help create a more open web,” he wrote.

No price has been named, but Google has made a new purchase: the Korea-based blog platform TNC, co-founder Chang Kim wrote on his blog Thursday.

TNC, founded in 2004 by Kim and Chester Roh, has created a blog software product called Textcube. An earlier TNC platform, Tistory, was sold to Korean portal Daum.

Google already owns a blogging platform, Blogger, which it purchased in 2003. From a technological standpoint, it’s not immediately clear why the company would want another one–although Kim likened his company to Blogger rival WordPress (and its parent company Automattic), the favorite of the open-source community, which could give a hint one way or the other. But more concretely, Kim wrote that this acquisition is in part to help Google get a bigger foothold in Korea.

In its automated auction system, Google will soon be looking at the length of time it takes to see an advertiser’s landing page once an ad is clicked as a factor in determining ad position and minimum bid for keywords.

People are more likely to abandon landing pages that load slowly, Google explained in its Inside AdWords blog.

I want to emphasize that I agree with the Google statement that people abandon pages that load too slowly.

Companies advertising on Google’s AdWords system better fine-tune their ad landing pages.

According to its creators, the technology does not pull as much information from the camera as it does from your location. The information gets piped over to Tonchidot’s servers, then filtered into tags. It also uses a similar model to some of the location-based social networks seen on the iPhone, so users can leave little virtual “hobo codes” for one another around major cities. So say, for instance, you ate somewhere and didn’t like it, you could visually tag it and leave your review. Others would then be able to see it when they use the application.

The funny thing is the entire demo could have been a complete hoax. We never saw the service in action–just a video of it placed in the gadget-saturated Akihabara district of Tokyo. It identified things like restaurants, local shops, and even products with links to user reviews, ratings, and of course buying options.

Things we still don’t know about the technology include:

-Who will be serving the advertisements attached to local shops and products

-If it’s limited to the iPhone or any device with a camera, GPS, and a fat data pipe

-What happens when things change in local areas, since the visual tags are based partially on things the technology recognizes

-When this would be available as something you’d get in the iPhone apps store

If the technology is working, objects on the touch screen get tagged in near real time. Users can then interact with those objects, making use of their handsets’ interface. In this case it was the
iPhone, so users could manage what they’re seeing into ordered lists and candy-colored floating tags that moved as they moved.

(Credit:
Tonchidot Corporation/CNET Networks)

One of the coolest things to be shown off at the TechCrunch50 conference might not ever become something any of us can use. It was a mythical technology demo from a company called Tonchidot Corporation, which showed off its “Sekai Camera” application. It uses both the camera on your phone and GPS to offer up a near real-time tag of what you’re looking at.

AT&T said Wednesday that it will soon offer its broadband subscribers unlimited free Wi-Fi access in its hot spots, as well as a new supercharged 10Mbps tier of service.

AT&T also announced it would add a new faster tier of service with 10Mbps downloads and 1.5Mbps uploads to its U-verse customers. U-verse is the newly upgraded network that AT&T is building to deliver TV and broadband over the same Internet connection to the home. Bundled with U-verse TV, the new, faster broadband service costs $55 a month. These subscribers also qualify to receive free Wi-Fi access.

AT&T’s move could be seen as a way to entice subscribers to bundle cell phone service with their broadband service. But it might also be an attempt to compete with other cellular providers like T-Mobile, which offers subscribers access to its more than 8,000 Wi-Fi hot spots. T-Mobile also has a service that allows its customers the ability to switch between Wi-Fi and the cell phone network while they are at home.

This means that users of the
iPhone, which has Wi-Fi built in and is exclusively sold in the U.S. for AT&T’s network, will only be able to take advantage of the free Wi-Fi offer if they happen to live in a part of the country where AT&T broadband is offered and if they subscribe to that service.

Free Wi-Fi will be offered only to AT&T broadband subscribers who subscribe to services with 1.5Mbps downloads or higher. Subscribers who only have the company’s wireless service will not be offered free Wi-Fi.

AT&T has more than 10,000 Wi-Fi hot spots in the U.S. in places like airports, McDonald’s restaurants, Barnes & Noble bookstores, coffee shops, and sporting venues. The carrier has been offering free Wi-Fi access to its higher-speed broadband customers since last year.

As a follow-up to my recent post on the WEF’s Global Competitiveness Report, I wanted to share what my colleagues at frog design, a global innovation firm, think. When we heard about a so-called innovation gap, we asked all four of our US studios what they thought. In one hour more than 50 “frogs” responded. Here’s our crowdsourced blitz survey response to the current innovation gap debate.

Read why chairs are the biggest barrier to innovation in the Fortune 500 and more.

Despite an over-abundance of media coverage about the importance of innovation in recent years, it seems the business media may not have gotten its point across. Instead of hailing innovation as The Next Big Thing, journalists and book authors now wonder if there’s an Innovation Gap in U.S. business. The September 22nd issue of BusinessWeek, “Keeping America Competitive,” is coupled with online articles like “Firing Up America’s Idea Economy” and “Can America Invent Its Way Back?.” Judy Estrin also examines flagging innovation culture in her new book, “Closing the Innovation Gap.”

Head on out to the border region between Tennessee and North Carolina, just on the edge of Great Smoky Mountain National Park. There, you’ll find a never-ending supply of people riding their motorcycles and driving their
cars along one of the most famous and beloved stretches of road in the South.

I had never seen an operation like this before, which surprises me. I heard afterward that this is something that’s popular on river-rafting routes, but I’d not seen it on popular highways. And being from the San Francisco Bay Area, which is of course close to the Pacific Coast Highway, that surprised me.

And how?

This is definitely a business based on direct-mail type of response. After all, there is a steady stream of traffic, and there’s a lot of competition. Yet Cannon said he’s been doing this since 2003, so I guess he sells enough $6 CDs of digital images–as well as more expensive coffee mugs, prints, and other manifestations of peoples’ ride along the famous road–to make it worth his while.

As a result, people like Darryl Cannon of Killboy.com have proliferated. They park their cars at strategic curves in the road where they can shoot pictures of drivers coming from either direction, and then they sell the drivers–at least some of them–the pictures.

“It would be better if they wouldn’t,” he said, ever the photographer.

That’s what Cannon, his wife, and a couple of friends are doing. Full time, he said.

After he and his team finish taking their pictures–he uses a Canon 40D and has “whole pockets of” 4GB compact flash cards–they go home and laboriously sort them and post them. They organize them by date, and then by category: “Cars-Trucks,” “Motards-Dirtbikes-Trikes-Scooters-Sidecars,” “Touring Bikes,” etc.

(Credit:
Daniel Terdiman/CNET News.com)

Cannon and others park themselves at strategic curves along the famously windy road to best capture drivers coming from either direction. They will also position a vehicle with a URL on its side so drivers can see where they can go to find their picture.

Known as “The Dragon,” the road is a longtime favorite, especially among motorcyclists, and hundreds, if not thousands, of people navigate its windy curves every day.

But it’s the extreme popularity of this stretch of US-129 with motorcyclists that makes Cannon’s business possible. These are riders who travel great distances to make their way through the Dragon, and enough of them seem to like the idea of buying a picture of themselves doing so to create a business. I suspect the same is true in other parts of the country that bikers frequent.

He said he works about 100 hours a week.

I stopped at one of the curves along the way to talk with him about what he was doing and why.

Darryl Cannon of Killboy.com takes thousands of pictures daily of drivers and motorcyclists on U.S. Route 129 on the Tennessee/North Carolina border. The road is popular, especially with motorcyclists, and Cannon and others in his company make full-time livings selling the images they take. At least three other operations do the same thing in the area.

Cannon said that plenty of people do that, some just to say hi.

FONTANA VILLAGE, N.C.–If you’ve got a fancy digital SLR and have been wondering how you could make money with it, I might have just the suggestion for you.

Cannon says that every day he sets up in a different place, something that’s not hard, given that this stretch of road has seemingly thousands of tight curves offering the kind of two-way vantage point he needs. He’s looking for good lighting and good background, so that he “might get a tight shot, but still get some of the background.”

For me, when I find myself being photographed without my consent, I usually make a gesture that I hope will render the picture worthless. It’s not what you think. And I guess I’m not the only one who does things with his hands.

At first, as I drove along this stretch of highway as part of Road Trip 2008, I was confused as to what was going on. But after seeing two such vehicles at corners, each of which had a URL emblazoned on the side, I figured it out: the photographers were taking pictures of the riders and drivers, and then later posting them online, hoping that people will visit their sites, see pictures of themselves on the famous road, and decide to fork over a few bucks for a high-res image.

• Reviews from competing publications are now presented in the right-side column of our product pages. While we are confident that CNET provides expert reviews that can make or a break someone’s decision to buy a product, we also know that some people want verification that there is agreement among reviews before pulling out their credit cards. No longer do those users have to scour the Web for these reviews, since we are now showing excerpts alongside our own reviews. See an example here (but note we are working on improvements to the presentation.)

• We now provide in-line buying advice on our product filter lists
(view an example). This information comes directly from our editors’ buying guides, so
you know you can trust it. This information is also being served on
pages for products that we have not reviewed.

As for the other improvements to the site, the infrastructure work will allow editors to update category home pages and various other pages much more rapidly, ensuring that users are always viewing up-to-date
content. This back-end improvement also will allow us to rapidly build new features. Indeed, several are included with the “new” CNET:

Product ratings are the core of what CNET Reviews does, so any tinkering with a familiar and successful format is guaranteed to be viewed skeptically by some longtime users. To those users, rest assured that
nothing has changed in terms of how we rate products, only in how we display the outcome.

For many long months, CNET’s engineers, editors, and designers have been hard at work rebuilding CNET from the ground up. This week, those changes are being unveiled for all our users. Behind the scenes, our publishing
infrastructure has been overhauled to provide many benefits, two of which will be most obvious: our page-load times are dramatically improved and our publishing tools have been streamlined to permit faster roll-out of content and new features (more on those below).

The most visible change is to our look and feel. Everything from our logo to our color scheme to site navigation was reviewed, tested, and reworked. The result is a site that many users who were able to view the pages in a beta stage described as “sleek” and “professional.” There is one aspect to the changes, however, that has proved to be a bit more controversial: the shift to stars to represent editorial ratings.

Our knowledgeable and passionate editors are still performing the same rigorous tests that have helped millions of consumers since the mid-1990s. The subratings and the final score are calculated the same way, and even result in a decimal score (for example 6.2). What has changed is that those ratings are converted to a five-star rating (with halves). One reason for the new visual treatment is that five-star ratings match those at our sister site, CNET Downloads, and the ratings you supply in our user opinions. We anticipate the change to stars will encourage more users to rate products on CNET and will make it easier to compare user ratings to editor ratings.

The bottom line is that the only thing we’ve changed is the display of our editors’ ratings. In fact, we’ve gone one step further to highlight the hard work that goes into a CNET review: we are now displaying on
product pages the subratings and overall score in a mouseover that hovers over the star ratings. Previously, this information was almost impossible to locate because it resided on a page describing our rating process that only a handful of our users were able to find. (Eventually, we hope to allow users to sort for products based on these subratings. For example, adding a sort option that would display all cameras that received a subrating
of 8 or above for image quality.)

• CNET is making its archive of reviews available to the public. Previously, we’ve hidden reviews after a product was discontinued to avoid any confusion with currently available items. But we recognize
that these old reviews could be useful to users interested in buying or selling old devices, so they’re back online and clearly identified as being discontinued. View an example.

There are numerous other improvements to the site (such as the treatment of photos on product review pages). Please spend some time clicking around and send me e-mail me your feedback. We are not finished improving the site and your opinions are an important part of the process. For example, maybe you’d like to choose between the old ratings and the stars, or see both, or …

The company also raised its forecast for the remainder of the fiscal year.

Video game maker Take-Two Interactive Software announced better-than-expected earnings on Thursday thanks to recording-setting sales of Grand Theft Auto IV.

Take-Two said it expects to earn 45 cents to 55 cents per share, excluding special items, on revenue of between $325 million and $375 million in its current, third fiscal quarter.

The company, which has rejected a $2 billion buyout offer from rival game maker Electronic Arts, is also having ”
formal discussions” with other parties about strategic alternatives, Chief Executive Ben Feder told Reuters.

For the second quarter ended April 30, net profit was $98.2 million, or $1.29 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $51.3 million, or 71 cents per share, in the second quarter of fiscal 2007. Sales were up more than 160 percent to $539.8 million for the period, blowing away analyst estimates of $499.1 million.

In May, Take-Two announced that the new game had raked in all-time records of $310 million on its launch day of April 29 and $500 million during its first week. The single-day figure shattered the previous record, set last September by Halo 3, of $170 million.

EA, which offered $25.74 a share for Take-Two in April, is undaunted in its takeover bid. The company recently announced another extension of its merger offer.

“The board remains committed to exploring strategic alternatives and we’re actively engaged in that process now,” Feder said. “We have had and are having formal discussions with a number of interested parties.”

Shares of Take-Two were up 34 cents, or 1.2 percent, to $27.65 in after-hours trading.
